National Standard Design

Abstract:

Designing for a nation differs significantly from designing for a business. While business design primarily strives to influence economic outcomes and consumer perceptions, national design enriches the community’s lives and enhances the country’s identity. Today, I am excited to share insights from my extensive research on street name signs, building number signs, and national standard designs, which I dedicated two years to studying from 2007 to 2009. These designs are currently being implemented across the nation.

Every individual possesses a distinctive personality, and design is a compelling medium for self-expression and a powerful tool for identifying a business or space. Unfortunately, the prevalence of pseudo-designers lacking professional design training has led to a chaotic urban landscape devoid of harmony. My goal has been to restore balance and coherence to our environment through thoughtfully conceived design. As reflected in this photographic illustration, my work interacts visually and perceptually with the surrounding typography and overall design.

Just like nature, design should serve the people. It must help individuals understand their identity and roles within society. Moreover, my designs aim to be timeless and adaptable, seamlessly fitting into any environment across Korea.
