In 2002, I pioneered the development of the Brand Design curriculum at Hanyang University, marking a transformative milestone in brand design education. This initiative redefined the academic framework for branding and positioned Hanyang University as a leader in design education. As one of only five institutions worldwide to initiate a Ph.D. in Design, Hanyang University has distinguished design from art, setting a precedent by establishing the College of Design—a groundbreaking achievement in Korea and beyond.
I have been privileged to present brand design curricula and methodologies at conferences and institutions. I delivered lectures on the critical role of brand design and consumer analysis. These discussions underscored the integration of strategy and management as fundamental drivers of branding success in regional, national, and global markets. Observing Korea’s ascent as a significant global branding powerhouse has been profoundly gratifying and reinforces the importance of design in shaping national identities.

Throughout my career, I have worked extensively with government initiatives to strengthen Korea’s cultural and national identity through design and branding. Korea stands at a transformative crossroads, facing the challenge of keeping pace with the world’s most advanced nations. To maintain competitiveness, design education must evolve in alignment with industry demands. My experiences have consistently demonstrated that design is a pivotal force for progress—just as previous industrial revolutions were shaped by design, the future must continue this trajectory.

Having lived and worked in highly advanced, developed, and emerging economies, I recognize that design is integral to a business and nation’s ability to achieve and sustain a competitive edge. Today, rapid technological advancements—particularly in artificial intelligence—are exacerbating disparities between leading nations and those struggling to keep pace. Unlike the digital transition of past decades, AI presents unique challenges that require urgent, decisive, and strategic action.

However, in many advanced countries, design education remains entrenched in outdated paradigms, posing significant obstacles to progress. I advocate for a fundamental rethinking of design education that fosters bold visions and embraces proactive methodologies. Educators and leaders must champion change, harnessing AI and other technological advancements to redefine how we teach and practice design. The time to act is now. The future of design education depends on our willingness to lead this revolution. I stand ready to embrace this challenge. TBC
