Seeing New Music: Contemporary Classical Music through the Eyes of a Graphic Designer

Denise Burt
Graphic Designer
Copenhagen, Denmark

Tuesday, February 25, 2025, 12:00 pm GMT

Copenhagen-based graphic designer Denise Burt has been on a unique discovery of contemporary classical music through her work designing covers for hundreds of art music releases over the last 20 years.

In this webinar she will share some personal stories of the design process behind a selection of her album designs. “What interests me is the challenge of finding a way to represent and communicate conceptual music to audiences. It’s the ultimate design task to try to make someone understand something about a piece of music before they have heard it.”

About presenter
Denise Burt is an independent graphic designer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has designed over 300 album covers since 2003 for a wide range of international artists both new and well-established – including many Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winning composers and ensembles.
In 2015, she published her book, ‘Seeing New Music’, telling the stories behind the creation of 24 CD covers. The Guardian’s Tom Service wrote, “Burt’s thoughtfulness, imagination and visual variety is an insight into what can happen when label, composer and artist are working in creative synergy”, while Eye Magazine noted, “Burt’s graphics respond to the radical nature of the music within ... with a visual shorthand that promises a sensual, emotional experience as well as an intellectual one”.

Signs, Systems, and Letterform Marks (SSL)
Signs, systems, and letterform marks visually express our behaviors, beliefs, and institutions. They alert us to potential hazards, lead us through physical environments, provide us with options, and represent the characteristics of organizations. Despite our diverse religious, political, social, and cultural backgrounds, universal signs, systems, and letterform marks have the potential to unite humanity through communication. Design students and professionals consistently update existing and develop fresh ones, establishing a common language accessible to all.

Ryan was a designer and artist of exceptional hono Ryan was a designer and artist of exceptional honor and deep responsibility. It is with profound sadness that I learned of his passing after losing touch for the past four years. I was met with this heartbreaking tragedy as I sought to reconnect today.

Typo-Image: Text is Always Part of Other Texts; Th Typo-Image: Text is Always Part of Other Texts; There is Never Pure Text

Albert Young Choi developed a methodology called 'Typo-Image,' which combines typography and imagery under the principle that "text is always part of different texts and never exists as pure text." Through the 'Typo-Image' approach, students learn about and explore 'Deconstruction,' a form of analytical critique introduced by Jacques Derrida, a prominent French philosopher of the 20th century. This process involves breaking down and revealing the underlying meanings, biases, and assumptions that shape how a text relates to what it describes.

One significant aspect of typography is its ability to convey diverse meanings. Designers recognize that typography's purpose is often inconsistent and ever-changing, much like the fluidity of letterforms and negative spaces. Image-like typography (Typo-Image) is particularly referential, especially when visuals engage with creativity and re-appropriation. In our increasingly communication-driven society, it is more important than ever to understand that typography holds immense potential for meaning and interpretation.

This presentation occurred at TypeCon 2021, a virtual event held from October 21st to 24th, 2021.

The street address reorganization in South Korea, The street address reorganization in South Korea, initiated in 2007 and primarily implemented by 2008, marked a significant milestone in modernizing the country's wayfinding systems and aligning them with global standards. Dr. Albert Young Choi, a prominent academic and practitioner in design, played a pivotal role in this transformation. Through his work, he addressed the visual pollution caused by inconsistent and cluttered address systems that had plagued South Korea for over a century.

Dr. Choi's research focused on creating a standardized design for street names and building number signs, ensuring clarity and usability. His system emphasized reducing wayfinding time, urban congestion, and logistics inefficiencies while promoting aesthetic harmony. These improvements not only streamlined navigation for residents and visitors but also underscored the practical benefits of design in urban planning.

Furthermore, Dr. Choi integrated elements of Korean cultural aesthetics into his designs, reflecting the country’s unique heritage and identity. His designs balanced functionality and artistic expression by embedding "Korean beauty and sensibility" into the visual framework. This approach enhanced the practical utility of the signs and contributed to Korea’s national branding efforts, fostering a distinctive visual identity.

The success of this initiative has had a lasting impact on South Korea’s urban environments. Beyond improving day-to-day navigation, the design overhaul served as a case study of how thoughtful design interventions can address practical issues while simultaneously enhancing a nation’s cultural and aesthetic presence on the global stage. Dr. Choi’s contributions continue to be celebrated as a blend of strategic thinking and cultural artistry, providing a model for other nations facing similar challenges.
